Winson Churchills WWII chesterfield sofa has recently been sold at auction for over £7000. Originally estimated at only £80 and in need of some extensive refurbishment, the classic 1940’s chesterfield graced his whitehall offices and has no doubt, been sat on by some prominent historical figures. As it was in such a delapedated state, the sofa was originally destined for the skip when auctioneers put it on sale as a practical joke.

Our friends at Distinctive Chesterfields have just launched their new website dedicated to the gorgous wing chair which includes, what i’m told would be the most popular wing chair available today, the Queen Anne Chair which sports some gorgous curves.
Their also in the process of updating their entire range of sofas and chairs so expect some new wing chair goodness early 2010.

Ive found this really interesting guide to reupholstering leather wing chairs which also serves as an insight into the construction and care for leather furniture.
Take care tho’ its not for the faint hearted. However if you want to try it your self and save some cash (handy in todays economic climate) then the instructions are pretty comprehensive.
Good luck!

This beautiful update on a classic tub chair simply looks amazing. I love the wood effect and the way this detail crosses.
The official Blurb is:
The hand which held you in its palm let you relax and drowse you with soft touch and mild swing. Endless flexible frame let you float in the air.
Combination of modern technology and functionality with a beauty of natural materials has found its place. Frame is made of straight grain veneers glued together. There are various grain directions in each layer for best strength and flexibility. Endless frame has no fix connection in the cross, only plastic sliders in between.
Seat is divided into 3 cushions covered in white leather, for better comfort and support of the body.
All the work on this project was done in Rhino and V-ray, from simple sketch models, to final renderings. Model
for FEM analysis of the frame was made in Rhino too, exported through IGES.
…which all sounds like designery voodoo to me. This being said, this concept is sure to be a winner

It seems that Patchwork Chesterfields are all the rage this year. Earlier I posted a link to a great example on Flickr which was preceeded with a flood of requests to our friends at Distinctive Chesterfields for similar patchwork sofas, now another example has surfacd, this time made in what looks like velour… it looks very nice!

Designer David Graas has designed a set of cardboard furniture including a table and low chair that I think would be amazing for anyone going to one of the summer festevals.

I’m thinking "Can we create cardboard Chesterfield Sofas?" as i’ll bet they’d be a smash hit.

Found on Ebay, this 1970’s sofa miraculously turns into a pool table!
The description reads:
You have never seen the like – a truly unique sofa that converts into a 6ft pool table!
Produced as a collaboration between Pierce upholsterers of Accrington and Riley, the famous pool and snooker table manufacturers, this is an exceedingly rare piece, and if not a prototype, then it was produced in a very limited quantity.
It looks like a very ordinary neutral brown dralon upholstered sofa, then the back flips round and turns into a pool table. There are two leveling adjustable feet underneath. Read the rest of this entry »

I think that this year I will make the effort to get back into Big Brother as theres a severe lack of chat about anything remotely cultural around the office water cooler (yes I know that the words cultural and Big Brother in the same sentence are a bit of a stretch) however one thing I have noticed is the new Diary Room chair.
Although not a Chesterfield sofa, the new baroque style Diary Room Chair is certainly eye catching with ultra modern 80’s style fabrics placed over a traditional style frame.

It seems that the Chesterfield sofa has been dragged in the recent UK MP’s expenses scandal with one MP, Conservative Christopher Chope, claiming for the repair of his beloved Chesterfield which cost the tax payers £881.25 (which is not that far off a new sofa!).

Did you know that the luxurious Chesterfield Mayfair Hotel in London has a number of Chesterfield Sofas on-site? I think this is great as if there was no pun intended, the orchestrator should definately be applauded for being an absolute genius.
The first example are a couple of high backed wing chairs in black leather which look great!
The second is a chesterfield suite in tan and a couple of deep buttoned side chairs

I’ve recently been browsing some of the conceptual stuff found on behance and came across this amazing wing chair design that takes the high back to a whole new level. I also absolutely love the colour (and are those jewelled buttons?) As a whole this interior really works and its nice to see a chesterfield in sucha contemporary setting

Network world has a great little piece on Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple’s home in the early 1980s. I think theres a lot to be said for the minimal style and I guess it was an early hint to how minimal things like the iPhone etc have become when you see the picture of how he was back then even tho he was a multi-millionnaire.
I’d call it ‘Party Space’ myself
